New resource for My Subscribers, and a cheap laugh for you

Greetings-it's been a fun week on the show- wenow have our very own Wind Up Man, welcome Maff Brown- a very funny local comedian- now on the Radio Jackie Breakfast Show...

Would you like to hear one of our wind ups- ok.... how about calling a pet shop, with a need for a very large toothbrush for a very angry pet.

Click here... (may take a while to download)

http://tinyurl.com/z4joe

The thing is with wind ups, it's a balance- we need to get a reaction, but we don't want to terrify or humiliate people- that's the balance. Like the above one we are seeing how more and more and more absurd we can get and get away with it, but without pushing it too far... but just far enough.....

Anyone you would like wound up by the way???

By the way, do check out a new resource I found, it's www.radiojam.co.uk- loads of great information here for you aspiring radio people.

By the way, if you have any comment at all or questions on anything you see here, do ask...., just reply to one of the posts, and I will do a Q and A in one episode. Or e-mail me at nlenterprises@hotmail.co.uk

All the best

Neil

Demo?

Look ma my first demo!!

So how on earth do you go about making a demo- thats convincing, good, and gets the attention of the people that you want to get the attention of.

First, it seems obvious, but so many don't do this- get clear on what sort of radio you want to do? Dance and R & B? Talk? Breakfast? Laid back music jams?

Obviously, angle your demo to the station you are approaching- listen to it first, and try to emulate their style to a degree when you do the tape- you would clearly send a different tape to Kiss FM than you would Magic FM, then you would Talk Sport.....

And make sure that you cut outmost of the music- Top and Tail it, so there's about 10 seconds of eirher end of the song, and then the rest of it they get to hear you.

It may be good to contact the Program Controller and tall him or her that you're going to send a tape in- and follow up afterwards. Polite and persistant. And don't give up.

Michael Hamilton sent me a tape and he kindly gave me permission to put it here.. I gave him a critique on it- but I have to say it was very good. I reckon there's a good career ahead of you Michael.

Have a listen

Words from the Wise

Here's another excerpt from my e-book, I will let you be the first to know when it's ready.

I asked broadcasting legend Jono Coleman about his career...

How did you do it?

I Got into Radio via advertising as a copywriter and TV ads, also I was doing a kids TV show called Wonder World on National TV, so radio was also something that came through that... as far as getting into the business I recommend that you should be a fan of radio- do free jobs- listen to the radio a lot and do volunteer work for local radio or hospital radio- anything helps... even student radio- whatever gets you through the door.

You can read more about Jono on www.jonocoleman.com

Relax Relax Relax

Welcome Karim, new subscriber- he is the inspiration for todays newsletter. I did some work for him in my Capital days. We had been chatting for a long time about doing a demo tape, and, finally we did it. Karim has never done radio before, but has a long held dream to Get Into Radio.

So I threw him in at the deep end and stuck him in front of the microphone to do a mock travel report.

Then gave him one of my intense training sessions.

Too slow. Too fast. Pracee the words. Talk as if you are having a conversation with your friend. Speed up. Diction. More conversational. More authority.

Then I slowed down, thought for a minute, and told him a joke.

He laughed, that diffused the pressure of the moment, and we tried again.

Within 20 minutes, 20 minutes we had a competent demo tape. My boss is going to have a listen. So if you doubt yourself, best think again.

I also learned that an important part of success in any endeavour is to be able to relax. Even when performers are really flowing and "up and at 'em" there's a kind of relaxed focused awareness in the moment... and you kind of "flow" with it. And it feels ecstatic as well. Sometimes we can get a bit over zealous in getting it all polished and perfect and forget this really important component.

I offer personal coaching sessions on any of the topics discussed here- if you are interested, do contact me at nlenterprises@hotmail.co.uk I can help make demos too.

More soon, meantime as a gift, here's a really silly bit from our breakfast show, when I umm, sellotaped my co-presenter. Tee hee.
